Things to do and see

Less than 20 yards from the sea, Pier View Apartments overlook the sand and shingle beach and the clear blue waters of Ventnor Bay. The apartments' location next to this Blue Flag beach ensures that they are always popular with couples and small families.

Supermarket, shops, tea houses and restaurants are just a five minute walk up the hill.

Along the seafront from Pier View are a choice of cafes, pubs and restaurants. The Spyglass Inn, one of the island’s finest pubs, sits at the western end of Ventnor Esplanade, in a superb position overlooking the English Channel. Together with the Mill Bay Inn, which has its own restaurant, at the eastern end, they provide good food, good service and a variety of live music most evenings and Sundays. For slightly more personal dining try the Ale and Oyster along the esplanade just before you get to the Spyglass and if you want to enjoy a more cosmopolitan atmostphere, try the Met.

There are other choices within walking distance in Ventnor town itself. Just up the hill on the left hand side is a personal favourite. The Thistle cafe is ideal for a hearty breakfast or an old fashioned English lunch. On the other hand, if you want to push the boat out, the understated Hambrough Restaurant on the cliff above Pier View delivers Michelin Star cuisine at a very affordable price and a little further afield the Rex offers fine French hospitality, often acompanied by easy listening piano.

Protected by the beautiful Boniface Downs and extending National Trust Land, this part of the island enjoys a long season and is also ideal for walks any time of year. Keep an eye out for wild ponys and goats that have been introduced on the downs in the last twenty years to help the natural ecology of the area. There is also an unusually large variety of birds and this is a hot-spot for Twitchers.

The beautiful and historic village of Bonchurch is a 15 minute walk along the sea wall going eastward, or a short drive.

Shanklin is a 10 minute drive away, and Sandown and Bembridge, renowned for their watersports, a little further.

The beautiful Botanic Gardens on the way to St. Lawrence are less than 10 minute drive to the west or an invigorating 30 minute walk along the cliffs.

This site is new and THINGS TO DO AND SEE will be updated in the near future, hopefully making it increasingly useful.
